Frequently Asked Questions

How can I login automatically?

Once you've logged in once with the 'remember me' box ticked, your login details are securely stored on your computer. From then on you can access your community directly, without needing to login, by navigating your browser to your-user-name.post282.com

So for example, if your username was 'newuser', you could navigate directly to your community by going to newuser.post282.com

Can I embed the login form in my site?

Yep, you can - to do so, take a look at our Post282 External Login Guide.

How do I view the posts in my community?

When you log in to the community you are presented with the list of latest posts. At the top of the page there are various navigation links - Widgets, Themes, and so on. If you navigate away from the posts page and wish to return to it, you can do so at any time by clicking on the 'View Posts' link at the top left-hand side of the your screen. To view the comments on a particular post (and to add to them yourself if you want to), click on either the comment count or the name of one of the previous commenters at the bottom of any post. The comment window for that post will slide open, letting you see other people's comments and place your own.

How do I add my own posts to the community?

At the top of the screen you can see a navigation bar, which gives you various navigation options. One of these options is 'Create Post'. Clicking on 'Create Post' brings you to the post creation page.

How do I add videos to my posts?

Post282 lets you upload your own images and place them in your posts. However, we currently don't permit uploading of videos to the site (assuming your community is hosted on Post282.com, rather than a customized installation). This is simply in order to reduce the amount of bandwidth we use each month.

However, you can upload your videos to other sites and then link to them in your posts. Modern video hosting sites (YouTube, Google Video, MetaCafe, and so on) let you upload your videos, and then embed them into your own website using embed code.

For example, here you can see the embed code on a YouTube video:

To add videos to your posts, simply copy the embed code from the site where the video is hosted, and paste it into the 'Add Video' box on the Create Post page.

To make it even easier, for YouTube, Google Video, MetaCafe, or iFilm videos, you can just copy the link to the page the video is on (copy from the address bar at the top of your browser), and paste it into the 'Add Video' box on the Create Post page.

How do I add images to my posts?

There are two ways to add images to your posts:

First, you can copy a link to the image into the 'Image' box on the Create Post page, and then press the 'Add Image' button. The image should then appear in the textarea below. To get a link to an image you see on the web, either right-click on it and select 'Copy Shortcut' (IE Users), or right-click on it and select 'Copy Image Location' (Firefox users). You can then paste the copied link into the Image box. However, the practice of hot-linking to images on other people's websites is not encouraged. This is because you will be using their bandwidth to display images on your community website.

The second approach is preferable. First, save the image you want to post onto your computer. Then, on the Create Post page click on the 'Browse' button, find the image you want to upload, and click 'OK'. Then click on the 'Begin Upload' button. A copy of your image will then be transferred to the Post282 servers, and once the upload has completed, a link to the image will appear in the 'Image' box. Select whether you want the image to be Small, Medium, or Large in your post (you can resize the image anyway, once you've added it to the post), and click on the 'Add Image' button.

In either case, if the image doesn't appear in the textarea after you have clicked the 'Add Image' button, try clicking on the textarea. Some browsers will require the focus of your mouse to be on the textarea before the image will be displayed.

Can I customise how my Post282 community looks?

There are a number of ways in which you can customise how your community appears to you.

First, your widgets (the boxes appearing on the left and right of your screen) can be moved around simply by dragging and dropping them up and down or to either side. You can also remove widgets by clicking on the X button at the top-right of each one. You can restore widgets you've removed on the Widgets page.

In this way you can change your interface to have one, two, or three columns (you may not be able to reduce the number of columns to one if your community contains advertising widgets).

Also, you can customise the background image displayed, and the colours of the sidebars, and of links, on the Theme page.
